Natsume Yuujinchou First Impression.

Natsume Yuujinchou is a supernatural series that started airing this summer season. So far 7 episodes have been fansubbed.
The series is about Natsume Takashi a high schooler with the ability to see spirits. No one knows his secret and he prefers to keep to himself. The only other person like him was his grandmother, Reiko, who went around defeating and taking the names of spirits to form a Book of Friends. Natsume decides to return these names with the aid of a spirit called Nyanko. Who he has promised the Book of Friends to if he dies.
Natsume Yuujinchou is a fine series that has a couple of faults. To begin with Natsume promises the Book of Friends to Nyanko if he dies, in return for Nyanko’s help. So why doesn’t Nyanko just kill him/let him be killed and take the book? Secondly Natsume’s pronouncement that he wants to return the names from the Book of Friends is completely abrupt and isn’t given proper explanation. And lastly I think it needs some more backstory as to why he makes friends with spirits so readily and not humans; despite the fact that spirits repeatedly try to kill him for the Book of Friends. Also it’s sad that the person Natsume most connects with is his dead grandmother but they never really go for the ‘kill’ emotionally speaking in that area. Admittedly most of these things relate to the first episode but they’re no less important. Each episode of Natsume Yuujinchou revolves around returning the name of a spirit or helping a spirit in some way. Thus far they’ve been decently done but it’s no Telepathy Girl Ran in terms of depth or uniqueness. There’s also a love interest but it’s too early to say how they’ll treat that. The animation sequence of Natsume returning names is actually kind of cool. The OP song “Issei no Koe” Shuhei Kita getters better as you get further into it while the ED song “Natsu Yuzora” by Kosuke Atari just sounds badly sung. Natsume Yuujinchou is a series that despite a few complaints is well worth watching.
Note: I’ve decided to split the medium score into low and high. It wasn’t giving me enough room to breathe as far as first impression scores go.
