There aren't many joinable NPCs in Dragon Age Origins, so the loss of just one is a blow. Unfortunately two of them Sten and Leliana are located in Lothering which becomes inaccessible after leaving the town. It succumbs to the Darkspwan army. For whatever reason the designers - BioWare chose not to warn you about this and they also didn't provide the NPCs locations or identities in the game or manual. Missing an NPC is bound happen in this situation, to the detriment of your party's balance and depth. I for one didn't want to be stuck with a dog as a party member for the entire game so I dove into the Quest for Leliana. Though it should also work
for Sten.

Following this guide may cause unforeseen problems because it requires editing save game files. Use at your own risk. You have been warned.

1) The first thing you need to do is download the Dragone Age Toolset. This is an editor released by Bioware that allows you to modify save game files among other things. It's pretty big and requires installing Microsoft's SQL database which is included in the installer.

2) Go to the Documents folder on your computer and navigate to Bioware->Dragon Age->Characters->{Your Character's Name}. The Documents folder is typically C:/Users/{UserName}/Documents on Windows Vista. This is where the save games are located. Make a copy of the Save folder and place it somewhere safe.

3) After installing the Dragon Age Toolset start it up and go to File->Open File. Navigate to the Save Game folder (not the backup) Documents->Bioware->Dragon Age->Characters->{Your Chracter's Name}. Open the Saves folder and then open the folder which contains your latest save game. This will be the one we edit.

4) Open the file with the extension .das. It will have the same name as the Save, as it appears in the game itself.

5) Expand the node labelled Top Level Structure by click on the Plus icon if you need to. It should reveal a tree which looks like the accompanying image.

6) Expand SAVEGAME_CAMPAIGN. Find the properties labelled CAMPAIGN_CIF_ENTRY_AREA_LIST, CAMPAIGN_CIF_ENTRY_AREA, and CAMPAIGN_CIF_ENTRY_POSITION. Copy their values into another document or write them down. We will be editing these properties and need to restore them later.

7) Change the values of CAMPAIGN_CIF_ENTRY_AREA_LIST and CAMPAIGN_CIF_ENTRY_AREA to lot100ar_lothering .

8) Change the value of CAMPAIGN_CIF_ENTRY_POSITION to 329, 291, 0. These are X, Y, Z co-ordinates.

9) Expand the SAVEGAME_PLAYERCHAR node and then expand the newly revealed SAVEGAME_PLAYERCHAR_CHAR node.

10) Copy the value of POSITION into another document or write it down. We will be editing this property and need to restore it later.

11) Change POSITION to 329, 291, 0.

12) Click Save on the Toolset Editor's Menu.

13) Start up the Dragon Age Origins game and load your newly edited save game. Everything going well you should appear in a field in Lothering. If not copy the back up of your save games to the Dragon Age save folder and try again. If you appear somewhere you shouldn't (like in the sky) go back to the editor and change the SAVEGAME_PLAYERCHAR_CHAR's POSITION property and the SAVEGAME_CAMPAIGN's CAMPAIGN_CIF_ENTRY_POSITION property until you appear at a correct location.

14) If your after Leliana head to the Tavern in Lothering or for Sten to the cage on the outskirts of town.

15) Once you're done save the game. Now we're going to edit that newly created save to return you to where you were before. You could complete other quests in the town or leave the area by the world map but it's best to keep the possible number of side effects to a minimum. I wouldn't want to leave by the world map and have some already run script trigger again.

16) Exit the Dragon Age game and go back to the Toolset Editor. Go to File->Open File again and navigate to the save game you just created and open the.das file . Make sure it's the right one.

17) Expand the SAVEGAME_CAMPAIGN node and enter the values you kept for the CAMPAIGN_CIF_ENTRY_AREA_LIST, CAMPAIGN_CIF_ENTRY_AREA, and CAMPAIGN_CIF_ENTRY_POSITION properties.

18) Expand the SAVEGAME_PLAYERCHAR node and subsequent SAVEGAME_PLAYERCHAR_CHAR node. Enter the value you kept for the POSITION property.

19) Click Save on the Toolset Editor's Menu.

20) Go back to the Dragon Age game and load your modified save game. Everything going well you should appear in the location you were before starting this guide. If something goes wrong copy the back up of your save games to the Dragon Age save folder and try again.

21) Enjoy your newly acquired party member!
